Art is the eye of the beholder. Often times, street art is a matter of interpretation.
Street art is legal.
Graffiti or “tags,” unless in a sanctioned area, is illegal.
Krakow’s street art scene is not extensive, but if you know where to look, it’s there. Another Walkative tour took a group of us in search of alternative art.
Mediums of Krakow’s street art fall into distinct categories – paint, stencils, stickers, and, recently, tiles or ceramics.
No matter the medium though, street art is meant to make you think, feel, emote.
It can be whimsical,
historical,
or, political.
It can be colorful,
or, black & white.
It can tell a story,
make a statement,
advertise a business,
inspire a neighborhood,
or, just be for the pure joy of it.
It can also be whatever the heck these are.
Street art can just be art placed out of doors – this awesome art installation hangs precariously between the beams of a bridge.
Street art comes and it goes. One of the city’s most beautiful murals was destroyed last week in the wake of progress, while another mural emerges.
Street art can be the heartbeat of a city. Although not in your face, Krakow’s heARTbeat beats strongly – the city is a survivor.
